Joe Ekidlak - Emotions in Stone

 |
Joe Ekidlak lives and works in Sanikiluaq (formerly Belcher Islands), off the west coast of Nunavik (Arctic Quebec) in the South of the Hudson Bay. Sanikiluaq is known for its smooth greyish clayey limestone which is only found on their small island. Inclusions of fossil plant remains give this material an interesting structure and vibrancy.
Out of this unique medium Joe creates an enormous variety of emotional speaking artworks. Based on his culture the main subjects are transformations within the human and animal world. But the artworks are not only depictions of Birds, Humans, Seals, Shamans...they live and sparkle with emotions to all the people that are watching these astonishing sculptures. This is probably the secret which makes his work of art so one-of-a-kind.
